[0.0s] Dumbgeons and Dragons will begin in a moment. Kavlaranan, you're going to write in this ledger and nothing is happening. No indentation in the paper, no ink being written across the page. Nothing. [13.8s] So I can't write in this. [19.4s] Okay, well, that was a good thought. [22.0s] Yeah. [22.7s] Like, do you want to use my pencil? [24.3s] I mean, I'm happy to try it, but I just, like, I can't even, like, dent the page. Like, it's going to accept writing on it. [34.1s] But sure, toss me the pencil. [36.2s] I rummage through my bucket and I throw him a pencil. Joe, can you write in it? Is it maybe just for Joe? [43.9s] You go to scratch something with pencil and same thing, nothing. You hear the sound of the pencil scratching, but nothing is happening to the page. [55.0s] Joe looks at it and says, I don't believe that ledger is for me. [62.0s] Do you know who it's for? [66.2s] I don't believe I'm authorized to remember. [68.0s] Thought I got him that time, guys. [69.8s] Yeah. [70.4s] But if you cannot make a record in the ledger, perhaps the ledger is not ready for any sort of categorization or input. [82.0s] This is, like, three pay grades above me, guys. [85.5s] The ledger isn't ready? [88.4s] Well, you cannot affect the ledger, correct? [92.8s] Yeah. [93.2s] I cannot. [94.9s] Perhaps the ledger is not prepared. [100.0s] Who prepares the ledger? [101.9s] Yeah. How do you, how do you prepare a ledger? [103.9s] Specifically for education. [105.4s] Hypothetically speaking. [106.8s] He's trying. Like, he's, you can tell, like, he's not immediately jumping to I don't believe I'm authorized to remember. [115.1s] He, it looks like he is, like, going through any sort of categorization. [119.7s] And he's Rolodexing in there. [121.6s] It's just paper sounds. [124.9s] He's flipping over. [126.0s] Pauses in, like, his shoulder slump and he's, I'm sorry, I don't believe I'm authorized to remember. [135.3s] That's OK. [137.6s] Don't worry about it, buddy. [138.9s] We'll figure it out. [140.3s] We'll figure it out. [142.2s] Dumbgeons and Dragons is a D&D actual play podcast, and I'm your dungeon master, Russ More, he, him. [148.5s] Also with me today is Amy More as Alydin, she, her. [152.0s] I know, not everything's a conspiracy. [154.6s] Carla Maxted as Bonwyn Everbane, she, her. [157.6s] We've tried so many times. [159.4s] Tom Laird as Kavlaranan Goldweave, he, him. [162.4s] Interesting. [164.2s] And Kyle Clasett as Bizard the Wizard, he, him. [167.3s] Damned if you do, damned if you don't. [168.7s] Dumbgeons and Dragons is a Patreon-supported show, so every twist, every triumph, every [174.3s] truly questionable decision is possible because of listeners like you. [179.4s] Join us today at Patreon.com slash dumb dragon cast. [182.2s] And now, fuck it, let's play. [186.2s] Hey, Joe, can I ask you a personal question? [190.2s] Do you hear anything when you stand in this circle? [192.7s] Like, does anything happen to you? [196.0s] Because when I stood in it, like, I heard, yeah. [198.9s] And there was an effect. [200.0s] No, no. [202.1s] He walks in and out of it a couple times. [205.5s] Nothing happens. [205.7s] Doesn't do anything, hey? [208.0s] Me neither. [212.2s] What do you think, like, you're going to do when we, when we leave? [215.3s] Just, like, take a break or you have some filing to do or are you going to be bored? [222.1s] Go back to sleep? [223.8s] Well, I will check the records and make sure everything has been maintained. [230.4s] And then await further instruction. [233.4s] Who is permitted to give you instruction? [235.8s] I report upward. [237.8s] But to whom? [239.4s] I don't believe I'm authorized to remember. [243.1s] Imagine the current headmaster or headmistress. [247.6s] Do you know who the current headmaster is? [252.6s] There was a change in who the headmaster was, [256.0s] but for some reason that record is lost. [260.7s] So you'll just stay here and wait? [267.1s] You'll be here if we need to come back? [269.9s] Correct. [271.0s] Fantastic. [271.9s] I hope to see you soon. [273.6s] Great. [275.6s] And he walks over to the filing cabinets and pulls them open. [281.0s] Pulls one out and begins to read, thumbing through it. [286.6s] Guys, this feels weird. [289.6s] Yeah. [291.8s] Should we take the ledger with us? [293.9s] Oh, we're taking the ledger with us. [295.3s] Absolutely. [296.0s] Okay. [296.3s] In fact, Alydin, let me go ahead and start. [297.8s] Let me see that real quick. [301.4s] As we walk to where we're going to walk, [303.0s] I'm going to be focusing on casting, identify on the ledger. [307.1s] Where is it that we are going? [310.3s] Just walking out real slowly. [311.5s] Okay, bye, Joe. [315.8s] Guys, he's going to be so lonely down here. [318.6s] I highly doubt that. [320.2s] Yeah, honestly, he seemed like if he just went to sleep [323.9s] when you found him, I think it's okay. [328.9s] Should we tell June? [333.8s] No, I say we keep it secret. [338.2s] In fact, we're putting that bookshelf back, [341.1s] and nobody needs to go down there and mess around with that. [347.1s] I agree. [347.9s] Seems safer that way. [349.8s] Okay. [350.9s] So Bizard, all of you are heading back up. [354.8s] You hear cabinets opening and closing, filing through papers [359.9s] as it kind of fades out as you get back up into the proper basement. [366.6s] It sounds like you push the cabinet back against the hole in the wall, [371.7s] and you cast identify as you get it back out into the light, [376.9s] and identify is just something that happens. [379.4s] Yeah, there's no- [380.6s] Well, yeah, I mean, there's like a casting time and whatnot, but- [383.9s] Yeah, sure. [385.3s] So as that begins to reveal information to you, [389.6s] so I mean, what you probably could have jumped to fairly quickly [394.5s] is that the ledger is in fact magical. [398.3s] You gather that it is dormant. [402.7s] There's a sense that you get that it is not empty. [407.9s] The pages are blank, [410.4s] but the magical nature of it leads you to believe [415.0s] that perhaps it is concealing some sort of information beneath it. [420.2s] It is not cursed, it is not sentient, but it is also not complete. [428.2s] The magic school that you get from that, [431.4s] because I believe that's something you get as well, [434.2s] is a hybrid of abjuration, divination, and enchantment, [442.6s] but none of them are primary. [445.0s] The dominant magical principle is continuity. [452.0s] Okay, just to clarify something, [454.7s] it says you learn its properties and how to use them. [458.7s] Essentially, I've learned that this is not something for us to be used, [462.3s] but more of a reference. [463.6s] Is that what I've gathered? [464.9s] Yes. [466.3s] So yeah, you've gathered that the ledger records identities [471.7s] that pass through institutional thresholds. [475.3s] Okay, where are we headed? [478.2s] Do we want to go talk to the historian? [480.2s] Do we want to see Alistair? [483.6s] I'm really, I need to think about this book a little bit more [486.6s] before I really speak more to it, [490.1s] but we need to think about Lingersville [493.2s] and what's going to set us up best to head that way. [496.1s] Yeah, what do we need? [497.4s] I mean, other than supplies, weapons, etc. [502.0s] What do we need to know before we go there? [504.7s] Or what do we think we want to find out when we get there? [508.5s] Yeah, I guess a little more detail on like [512.2s] what exactly happened to the town. [514.8s] Yeah. [516.6s] That sounds like a historian. [519.0s] Yeah. [519.9s] Oh, so we should chat with Candle. [525.3s] Okay, cool. [526.0s] Light up our situation a little bit, yeah. [528.4s] Very illuminating. [531.5s] Oh, no. [532.0s] They're going to be like this the whole time. [536.8s] Okay, cool. [539.1s] I bet that will make us really popular with this new historian. [544.8s] He probably, they, she probably loves jokes about their name. [551.4s] They've never heard before, probably. [553.9s] Or a million times over. [555.6s] Sure, they'll be all new. [560.0s] Are they working in the school? [561.3s] What's the time of day right now? [562.9s] School. [563.4s] We're in that basement. [565.2s] I mean, you weren't in there at a super, you know, [568.1s] there were a couple check-ins and you said to do them every 10 or 15 minutes or so. [573.0s] So like no more than an hour. [575.4s] Okay. [576.3s] Yeah, enough time for basically Tally to go run, find, bond, win, and come back. [583.1s] So it's like the end of the school day. [585.5s] Yeah, post-lunch, you know, things are wrapping up. [589.1s] But yes, all educators should still be there. [593.1s] You enter back into the school and head towards the history class [599.3s] and the bell rings and students begin to pour out of the of the rooms running off for the day. [606.2s] You walk into the history class and there a couple students kind of push past you [613.5s] as you are entering and inside you see a kobold dressed in a very nice cropped [622.1s] pants and a very clean cut blouse. [626.7s] She's wearing very small round glasses that extend down to the edge of her nose [635.1s] and she's erasing the chalkboard and she sees you come in and says, [638.7s] Alydin, did you forget something? [639.9s] I actually didn't see you in class. [642.0s] Is everything all right? [643.0s] Oh yeah, no, everything's fine. [644.7s] Sorry, I'll make sure to get the notes from somebody. [649.6s] Of course, of course. [651.4s] What can I do for you? [652.5s] We just were wondering if we could ask you a couple questions. [656.7s] Okay. [657.8s] These are, she just realizes the awkwardness of the situation of being a 14-year-old being like, [666.4s] these are my friends here, these fully grown adults. [669.8s] These are my peeps. [671.0s] This is my posse. [673.6s] This guy's my magic daddy. [676.5s] This is my government worker and my mom weaponsmith. [686.5s] There's lots of children with found family at this school, [689.1s] so that makes a lot of sense. [691.4s] It's lovely to meet you all. [693.1s] Hi, Bonwyn. [694.2s] It's really nice to meet you. [695.5s] Bizarre. [696.2s] Cav. [696.7s] Welcome to the middle, everybody. [700.4s] Once again, I find myself here. [752.8s] That way you can do it at karaoke. [755.0s] Exactly. [755.7s] Absolutely. [758.2s] I mean, the first episode of season three, at least, right? [760.8s] Yes, yes. [761.5s] Yeah, exactly. [764.0s] And if you, you know, a little help us out. [767.7s] These things are very close to being good. [770.4s] I would put them in the 90 to 95% ready to go. [775.9s] Like there's some fantasy names in there that are hard to catch. [780.6s] Sure. [780.8s] If you see an error. [781.7s] The cast probably doesn't even know how to spell some of them. [784.0s] Probably not. [786.3s] You can report that on the site, too. [788.1s] And it'll come straight to us and we can fix it. [790.1s] So thank you for that. [906.6s] I was just trying it on. [907.4s] I think that's Midnight Burger. [908.8s] Oh, is that what it is? [911.0s] I thought it was John Wayne. [914.0s] Now come on back, kick the dust off your boots anytime. [916.8s] All right. [917.6s] Love you, bye. [918.4s] Love you, bye. [921.9s] So I'm sorry, you had questions about... [927.7s] Sorry, did you say what you had questions about? [930.7s] No. [931.7s] No, we didn't. [932.4s] But we do have questions about Lingersville, if you're versed. [939.1s] I've read up on Lingersville. [942.1s] Very interesting historical moment in the transition from Lingersville [946.3s] to Vintersmouth to Vintersmouth. [950.0s] But yes, what do you know and what can I fill in? [956.1s] Oh, I think the water went away and that's why. [961.4s] Yeah, basically just what happened. [963.6s] It's pretty weird that there was a water problem [968.1s] and then the whole down basically moved. [970.3s] I mean, that seems unusual. [972.8s] Well, yes. [975.0s] Well, Lingersville... [976.8s] Well, let's take it back a little bit. [978.2s] Lingersville was a vineyard settlement. [981.1s] It centered on Lake Vochtig. [984.0s] It was built on, as it was well known, remarkably pure water. [990.4s] That was one of the calling natures of the town. [997.1s] It flourished for some time, but then residents reported illness. [1003.2s] There were some strange behavioral effects. [1007.8s] A water contamination event occurred [1012.9s] that was directly, in the lessons that I received, [1020.4s] presumed to have caused the illness. [1022.9s] So the lake itself was dammed and the town was relocated [1027.7s] to what would become Vintersmouth. [1031.1s] And that's when the rise of this town occurred. [1033.7s] From a small settlement along the river expanding into, [1038.5s] well, I mean, you could call it the much larger town that it is today. [1043.0s] And it was an unfortunate but well-managed transition [1049.6s] under quick action, civic leadership, and forward planning, [1055.1s] as all the lessons tell. [1057.6s] Did anyone ever test the water and find out what happened? [1061.3s] It was interesting because there's mixed reports. [1065.2s] The contamination itself, I suspect, [1067.7s] based on what I've been able to research of my own, [1072.8s] did not appear to be any sort of bacterial contamination. [1076.2s] I have found discrepancies in the timeline [1080.4s] that don't quite match public records. [1085.3s] Oh, like what? [1086.7s] Well, records from the final year are incomplete [1091.0s] and the school records are, and I'm talking about here, [1097.6s] the school records are particularly sparse. [1100.4s] The relocation planning began before the contamination peaked. [1108.3s] Checking kind of the timing of all of these like [1112.9s] is led to believe that Vintersmouth was a town [1115.2s] that came because of the, quote unquote, fall of Lingersville. [1122.6s] Wouldn't call it that necessarily. [1128.0s] It was already being started. [1129.8s] Exactly. That's right. [1133.2s] Why would they do that if there wasn't a reason to move the town? [1138.5s] That is a great question. [1140.6s] I have found in my travels some records that elude to the fact [1147.5s] that some families transferred wealth before the crisis. [1152.6s] And I suspect, I cannot confirm this, [1156.9s] but I do suspect that there was knowledge [1160.9s] ahead of public knowledge, if you know what I mean. [1166.1s] So you're thinking some like insider trading kind of shit going on. [1170.4s] Yeah. [1171.2s] Like the elites knew something was going to go wrong [1174.5s] and started making plans to get out. [1178.3s] Or did somebody poison the well? [1184.2s] That is a possible piece of the puzzle, yes. [1194.9s] I can't substantiate that. [1196.4s] I've only kind of pieced together different transitions [1199.5s] and different ledgers and that sort of thing [1201.9s] and come to my own conclusions. [1204.3s] Right. [1205.4s] It's hard to stand on speculation when the evidence just isn't there sometimes. [1209.2s] Exactly. [1209.7s] When everything in the historical record points to the fact of the timeline [1216.1s] that adds up, so to speak. [1220.1s] Interesting, though. [1221.3s] Also, I just love gossip. [1223.7s] I know it's historic, but the elites being bad, [1227.8s] that just plays right into my worldview. [1231.9s] Well, that's excellent. [1234.3s] What do you... [1236.1s] Well, it sounds like you know... [1240.1s] You're an Everbane, correct? [1241.3s] So you've been here for some time, [1242.7s] or at least your family has, not necessarily you. [1245.2s] Oh, for sure, since, I mean, for many, many generations. [1249.6s] I think going back that far. [1253.0s] The Everbanes go back, as you mentioned, some time. [1256.5s] And the dam, as much as it was... [1260.9s] I mean, the dam was framed as a public health measure. [1264.5s] It required unusual structural reinforcement, [1270.3s] and they had to call in several smithing families. [1273.6s] And there are records that the Everbanes [1276.9s] may have been one of those families. [1279.7s] Huh. [1280.7s] I mean, it would explain why we ended up here. [1284.4s] I mean, a dwarven smithing family, [1288.2s] I mean, we're definitely still a minority in this town, right? [1293.7s] So that's interesting. [1299.5s] So you're saying you think my family [1301.6s] might have helped build the dam to stop the... [1305.5s] Yes. [1306.1s] Yeah, well, I believe so. [1309.0s] If what I've read holds true, then they may have been a part of it. [1313.6s] I don't... I have no knowledge or information [1319.0s] that would insinuate them in any way, [1321.8s] other than the fact that they were called upon [1324.6s] to help the public health concern. [1329.5s] How did building a dam help the public health concern? [1334.8s] Well, the lake in and of itself, [1339.1s] with conflicting accounts, of course, [1344.5s] was believed to be the source of the contamination. [1348.8s] So damming off the lake, [1351.1s] removing the water from the lake. [1354.1s] So they just took all that water out? [1356.7s] Well, over time, if you cut off the supply, [1361.3s] the lake will dry up. [1362.7s] Right. [1363.5s] Diverted the river, [1364.5s] and that's how we have the stream going to Kingston. [1367.2s] Used to be forked. [1369.0s] If you've walked along up near there, [1372.0s] where the dam is quite prominent, [1374.9s] the river forked. [1375.9s] And that's first pass, went down to Lingersville, [1380.5s] and then a lesser stream came down this way. [1383.7s] After the damming, more flow came down this way. [1388.1s] Wouldn't one assume if there was a contamination in the water [1392.9s] that it would come from a source? [1395.3s] One would assume. [1396.4s] I have thoughts about where you're going with that, Alydin. [1398.9s] I know. [1399.3s] Not everything's a conspiracy. [1402.5s] But maybe. [1403.0s] But some things are. [1404.0s] No, I think this very much is. [1407.3s] Because agreed, something's feeding the lake, [1410.0s] and there's not a problem coming from elsewhere. [1415.0s] So it's not like the river going down to Kingston. [1419.2s] Yeah, it's the same river. [1420.5s] It's the same river. [1421.3s] So maybe there was something on the land. [1424.3s] It was passing through, or someone was doing something. [1428.2s] Like a runoff situation? [1429.7s] I think it was something they did at the bottom of that lake. [1432.5s] Yeah. [1432.9s] Oh, are you saying you want to get to the bottom of it? [1435.8s] Yeah, and I pull up my book, Portals, Portals, Portals. [1438.1s] I'm like, how else could you get a contaminant [1439.7s] in through water that's not visible? [1442.8s] Oh, interesting. [1444.1s] This might be a conversation. [1446.0s] OK, is bottom of a lake in the index [1448.6s] a portals, portals, portals? [1450.3s] It's so hard to say portals three times. [1452.4s] Why is that? [1453.2s] It's really hard. [1455.5s] I don't know. [1457.1s] The thing earlier sounded a lot harder. [1458.9s] It's probably because of the store, Portals, Portals, [1462.1s] which you're probably equating it with. [1465.7s] More well-known than the book, Portals, Portals, Portals. [1468.9s] Exactly. [1469.5s] So you kind of just stop after the two. [1473.9s] Thanks, Candle. [1474.9s] Of course, of course. [1476.7s] More knowledge is good knowledge. [1479.5s] You're a quick one, Alydin. [1481.7s] You're asking really good questions. [1483.2s] Thanks. [1483.7s] I'm sure they're going to get me into a lot of trouble one day. [1486.9s] Sounds like Alydin doesn't have to do that homework [1489.3s] you mentioned earlier. [1490.6s] No, no, Alydin has to do that homework. [1495.9s] Won't take you long, Alydin. [1497.2s] Don't worry. [1497.9s] We'll get it done before we head to Lingersville, [1500.1s] which, yeah, Alydin's going to be gone for a little while. [1503.1s] Oh, sorry, you're heading to Lingersville. [1506.3s] Oh, did I say that? [1507.3s] Yeah. [1511.0s] You did, but that's fine. [1512.5s] We're camping. [1514.0s] We just want to make sure that everything is fine [1516.5s] and we're not going to get some sort of weird disease. [1520.2s] So you're going there to see if you're not [1523.6s] going to get some sort of- [1524.7s] No, no, we came to check with you. [1526.6s] It was so nice meeting you. [1528.6s] Thank you so much for your information. [1530.9s] That was fantastic. [1532.6s] We have a thing. [1535.9s] We got to go. [1537.1s] Oh, right, the thing, of course. [1538.3s] The thing, right, guys? [1539.1s] Are you ready for camping? [1541.1s] Okay. [1541.5s] It's a family trip. [1542.8s] Okay. [1544.1s] Great. [1544.6s] Well, I'll see you in a couple days, it sounds like. [1548.7s] With the homework. [1549.9s] Let's go. [1550.6s] With the homework. [1552.0s] Here, take a booklet. [1553.7s] This is what we'll be working on for the next two days. [1555.8s] Okay, thanks. [1556.5s] You actually have to read this one. [1557.9s] This is how I wish I could behave in real life. [1560.1s] Awkward conversation. [1561.1s] I actually need to leave. [1562.2s] I just have to not be here right now. [1564.4s] Just walk away. [1565.2s] Goodbye. [1566.6s] Yeah, I love it. [1567.9s] You exit the hallway and are heading back [1570.1s] towards the front entry into the open courtyard. [1574.1s] Kids are playing on the playground. [1577.5s] What do you do? [1578.1s] Where do you want to go? [1578.9s] Guys, are you sure we shouldn't tell anybody [1581.3s] that there is a sentient paper hallmaster monitor [1585.9s] being in the basement? [1588.0s] I don't want to tell Tally. [1589.1s] She's just going to go down there. [1591.5s] Yeah. [1592.0s] Yeah, no, we don't want the kids to know. [1593.7s] I mean, that was the one hard question I had, so. [1594.5s] Yeah, but like. [1597.8s] Okay. [1598.4s] Is it responsible? [1598.8s] What's the benefit? [1600.6s] What's the benefit of letting someone know? [1602.7s] In case he gets out. [1606.0s] Never got out before, and he's been there [1608.2s] for like 250 years. [1611.0s] All right, so what you're saying is [1614.0s] you guys will be held responsible if anything happens. [1617.2s] Well, I don't love the way that's framed. [1620.6s] I mean, that's kind of how it's been. [1621.9s] I mean, you know, Cav literally went on trial for something. [1625.3s] True. [1625.6s] So we're kind of. [1626.7s] You know what? [1627.5s] We kind of are responsible, I guess, actually. [1630.4s] Thanks, Buzzard. [1631.1s] You're right. [1631.7s] Yeah. [1632.4s] It sounded bad, but it's just accurate. [1634.4s] Yeah, we're responsible for everything that happens to us. [1637.6s] So we're kind of responsible. [1641.2s] Okay. [1642.5s] Okay. [1643.4s] Do you feel okay, Alydin? [1645.2s] Yeah, I guess so. [1646.5s] See, if we told somebody and they went down there [1648.1s] and got hurt, we'd also be responsible for that. [1652.1s] Damned if you do, damned if you don't. [1653.8s] That's right. [1654.8s] Okay, fair. [1656.0s] Are we bringing Alistair to Lingersville? [1660.1s] Oh, um. [1661.1s] Yeah, we need a tester. [1663.8s] What? [1664.8s] What?
