[0.0s] Hey, psst, Dumbgeons and Dragons starts in just a second. [4.0s] There's the jingle of a bell as a customer leaves. [8.0s] Bizard, you're behind the register and you reach into your pocket and there's a quick reminder of where you were the night before. [20.0s] You don't have long to think about it though as Alydin runs up beside you. [25.0s] Um, hey, do you got a second? Just right now, just a little moment. [29.0s] Yeah, Alydin, what's going on? [31.0s] Well, I was just wondering because we started talking about it before and you mentioned something about a weave [36.0s] and then something about like there's a price to pay and like, and you know, [42.0s] I know this isn't like formal kind of like school and stuff, but I'm real keen to know. [51.0s] Yeah. [52.0s] Everything about magic, everything. [55.0s] Every, I mean, I wouldn't even dare to say I know even a quarter of the things there is to know about magic. [63.0s] It's one of those mysterious things that you always kind of follow and chase [69.0s] and hope that you can glimpse it through the mirage that it presents itself through, [75.0s] which speaking of a mirage, the weave in and of itself is sort of something that you can only see at certain points. [83.0s] But just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there and isn't able to be manipulated. [90.0s] You know how on a hot day you can take a fan and kind of fan yourself off, right? [96.0s] Yeah. [97.0s] See, that's kind of you affecting the air around you to create a sensory effect. [103.0s] Um, certain sensory effects that can be made can be imparted upon objects. [109.0s] Say you were to borrow an essence of the weave and pull essentially light out of the weave, [119.0s] like a source of light from magic and imbue it into an object for, say, maybe money? [128.0s] If you've ever done that? [130.0s] Well, I don't get what you mean. [134.0s] Alydin just like kind of holds like intense eye contact. [139.0s] Do you want to learn about magic or do you want to lie? [142.0s] I would prefer to do both. [147.0s] Dumbgeons and Dragons is a D&D fifth edition actual play podcast [151.0s] and I'm your dungeon master Russ More he-him. [154.0s] Also with me today is Amy More as Alydin she-her. [158.0s] With this key I can come in if the door is locked. [162.0s] Carla Maxted as Bonwyn Everbane she-her. [165.0s] Like, is there a bear in the tunnel? [167.0s] And Kyle Claset as Bizard the Wizard he-him. [170.0s] Uh, yeah, yeah, I'm one of the mayor's advisors. [175.0s] Dumbgeons and Dragons is a Patreon-supported podcast where you can get a 7-day free trial [179.0s] if you sign up today at patreon.com slash dumb dragoncast. [183.0s] Now fuck it, let's play! [185.0s] Alright. [189.0s] A little bit. [190.0s] Cause li-listen, lying has kept me and the kids safe for a long time. [197.0s] Alydin, are you living here? [199.0s] No. [201.0s] Alydin, did you just take the bread from those-those buns-toe? [205.0s] No. [207.0s] I can respect that. [209.0s] There's nothing wrong with a-a lie if it serves you and serves the ones you care about. [216.0s] So, I can respect that. [218.0s] How about, okay, I won't lie to you. [220.0s] That works for me, if it works for you, of course. [223.0s] As far as this exchange that we have going on, um, I'm gonna be honest and forthright. [231.0s] So, I feel like it is only a fair exchange if you do the same in this regard. [238.0s] I'm not asking you to spill everything about your whereabouts, [241.0s] where you go after the store, before the store. [243.0s] As long as whatever you do outside of that doesn't make its way through the door, [248.0s] we're gonna be okay. [251.0s] But you can always come to me if something does happen and you need to. [260.0s] I know you're-I know you're capable. [263.0s] But if you need to, you come here. [267.0s] I pull out an extra key and I put it on the desk. [271.0s] Alydin's eyes are like dinner plates, like deer in headlights. [278.0s] I don't think she's ever touched a key that she hadn't stolen off of somebody for some reason. [285.0s] And she just stares from the key, up to you, back to the key. [291.0s] Pushes it forward. [293.0s] I'm trusting you. [296.0s] So, like, with this key, I can come in if the door is locked? [304.0s] That's correct. [306.0s] Now, of course, I'll know, but it is for you to use. [312.0s] Oh. Okay. Thanks. [316.0s] And she takes the key and she takes a piece of yarn out of her bucket [321.0s] and snakes it through the hole in the key and ties it onto the handle of her bucket, [327.0s] but obviously not hanging out of the bucket, inside the bucket. [331.0s] I'll keep it real safe. I won't come in here and do weird stuff. [336.0s] I don't think that needed to be said, but okay. [341.0s] Well, you kids say the wildest things. [344.0s] You've never worked with kids before, have you? [347.0s] No, I don't even think I necessarily was one. [352.0s] But, you know, that's my own doing. [355.0s] So this is going to be very interesting for me. [359.0s] But anyway, so about that light being imbued into an item, per se, [366.0s] I noticed the coin that I gave you to get some coffee and pastry from those buns dough. [375.0s] They kind of lit up a little bit on your way out. [378.0s] Oh, did they? [381.0s] That just kind of sometimes like sometimes money is just shiny, I think. [388.0s] Okay. The connection to money, what does it make you feel? [395.0s] Well, probably the same thing that most people feel and because everybody wants it. [403.0s] Right? So like money is like, you know, you're safe and you're full. [414.0s] And that that would make anybody happy. So I guess money would make me happy. [418.0s] Money would solve lots of my problems. I do think so. [422.0s] I agree with you in the sense of security. Money brings security. [427.0s] Now, for certain political figures, money brings them power. [432.0s] While it is happiness, you could you could reduce it down to happiness. [437.0s] You need to find out what is the most salient point that you are connecting to, [444.0s] because that is the thing that will draw you closer to the weave. [449.0s] When you feel safe and secure, when you feel like you can provide, [455.0s] maybe that's maybe that's what you need to focus on in those moments. [459.0s] And when you are trying to grasp at the weave. [464.0s] But how do I know when I'm trying to grasp at the weave? [475.0s] At Everbane's, we hear heavy steps coming down some stairs. [483.0s] And Bonwyn is stepping into the open space, feeling a little worse for Rare. [494.0s] Having been out late last night with Neven, taking in some of the nobles parties. [505.0s] But not only the festivities, once you returned home, [509.0s] there was a noise that seemed to be keeping you up all night. [516.0s] Sounded like at some points scratching in the floors, [522.0s] like a knocking sound that came throughout the night. [526.0s] And be it the state you were in or others, you didn't really get up to try and find it. [532.0s] But now that you're up and ready for the day, [536.0s] you're extra sluggish because of the lack of sleep due to this. [540.0s] So as you enter, Thane is just getting on their gear for the day [545.0s] and they see you out of the corner of their eye and they say, [548.0s] Oh, did you have fun last night? [552.0s] Yes, costume party was a success. [557.0s] Well, I mean, heard stories down at the shop. [561.0s] Yeah, I can tell by the way or the face you're making at me. [564.0s] I got you. I got you this passes you a coffee and a muffin. [569.0s] You're the best. [570.0s] Oh, yeah, we were out kind of late. [572.0s] And then I don't know, there was something going on here. [576.0s] I was hearing like a weird sound and I couldn't get to sleep. [579.0s] But I also, you know, when you're just like too tired. [583.0s] Yeah, I don't. It'll go away. [585.0s] It's fine. [587.0s] So I didn't check it out. [590.0s] So it's not those kids again, is it? [594.0s] Well, I don't know. I thought I'd check that first, but I don't think so. [598.0s] Like, I know Alydin now it'd be weird, I think, [601.0s] if she was like trying to sneak in that way again. [604.0s] But I don't know. Can you help me move the? [607.0s] Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. [609.0s] And we'll just double double check. [611.0s] Two of you push the crate that you were the crater, [614.0s] the table that you had previously put to stop Alydin from coming through that way. [619.0s] You move it off and you see the door there and Thane lifts it, [624.0s] allowing you access to to see down in. [627.0s] It's a from from the surface. [631.0s] It's it's a shadowy tunnel. [633.0s] There's a little stepladder that goes down into it. [636.0s] You know, it'd be a comfortable fit for you. [639.0s] Probably a considerably tighter fit for Thane, who's much taller than you are. [644.0s] Let's make an investigation roll. [648.0s] Oh, not great. I am tired. [652.0s] That's an eight with bonus. [654.0s] You're looking down into it like nothing's clicking with you. [658.0s] You put your hand on the back of the doors. [660.0s] You're trying to lean down without actually going in. [662.0s] And you feel on the underside of the door. [665.0s] There's scratch marks. [667.0s] Oh, oh, sorry. [673.0s] Oh, oh, what is it? [676.0s] And I'm kind of like a bit hunched over, right? [678.0s] Because I'm leaning down and just not even standing up, [682.0s] but just moving my hand up the trap door. [685.0s] Like, oh, again, just like if I ignore it, maybe it won't be there, Thane. [691.0s] Mm hmm. [693.0s] You see this? You feel this? [695.0s] He leans over the door a little bit more to get a better look at what you see. [700.0s] And yeah, that looks. [705.0s] Yeah, that wasn't kids. [707.0s] No, it doesn't look like kids doesn't look like it. [710.0s] That's those are some large scratch. [713.0s] Like, that's a big tool or kind of like holds up their hand. [719.0s] Like, that's something big. [721.0s] Yeah, I don't even know what this could be. [724.0s] Like, is there a bear in the tunnel? [726.0s] That can't be. [728.0s] I oh, yeah, no. [731.0s] I mean, we just maybe there is a bear. [733.0s] Good thing the kids didn't find the bear. [735.0s] Do we want to close it? [737.0s] Oh, yeah, let's close it. [739.0s] Great idea. [740.0s] Let's close that. [741.0s] Move the table. [742.0s] I'm going to just you know, that small anvil that I use. [746.0s] Let's maybe just get that on the table. [748.0s] Let's just. [749.0s] OK, there's been a lot of talk about like noises coming from below. [755.0s] I don't know if you heard the criers there the last few nights, [758.0s] but like people have been saying like they're hearing things. [763.0s] And if you're hearing things, then. [767.0s] Yeah, I mean, they don't even probably know about the tunnel. [770.0s] So nobody else would have thought to look there. [774.0s] I mean, how big did you say those goblins were? [778.0s] Oh, no, no. [780.0s] No. [781.0s] No, no, no. [782.0s] Not I mean, maybe three of them in a trench coat with like some [786.0s] knife fingers like that I made, you know, but otherwise, no, no, no, no. [792.0s] And I mean, those weren't that that wasn't made by like something [796.0s] that I would have made. [797.0s] That seemed it's rough. [799.0s] That was claws. [800.0s] That seemed organic. [804.0s] OK, do we call animal control? [806.0s] I think I think we got to go find days or somebody like we got to [810.0s] show them what we've seen and maybe there's a connection they can [815.0s] use it as an access point and we can just shut it up behind them or maybe [820.0s] they can find another one. [821.0s] I don't know. Where's that kid? [822.0s] The kid knows how to get in there, right? [824.0s] I know, but we can't tell date, right? [827.0s] Yeah. [828.0s] OK, let me just go upstairs. [829.0s] I need to grab something before we go. [832.0s] But then by then I'm going to have drank this coffee and I'm going to be [836.0s] 10 out of 10. [837.0s] We can go talk to days. [840.0s] We'll be right back. [844.0s] It's the middle. [847.0s] Welcome to the middle, everybody. [848.0s] What's up? [852.0s] Wow. [853.0s] Couldn't couldn't help myself. [856.0s] Came in came in real hot there. [858.0s] Sorry. [860.0s] I'll always have your back. [861.0s] Thank you. [862.0s] I know. [863.0s] It's actually it was quite romantic, you guys. [865.0s] Yeah, it's really good. [866.0s] Yeah. [867.0s] Yeah. [868.0s] That's nice. [869.0s] That's what you have to aspire to everybody. [870.0s] That's right. [871.0s] Yep. [872.0s] Yep. [873.0s] This is the bar. [874.0s] If you're supposed to make a weird bad dated reference. [878.0s] Just you do it. [880.0s] Double down on it. [881.0s] Yeah. [882.0s] Thank you for doing that, sweetheart. [884.0s] You're welcome. [885.0s] Love that. [886.0s] We're. [887.0s] I don't know how to get out of this. [893.0s] We're trapped. [894.0s] We're trapped in this. [896.0s] We're trapped in the 90s. [898.0s] Let me out of the stated reference. [900.0s] Oh, God. [902.0s] Dude, where's my car? [904.0s] Sweet. [905.0s] Oh, no. [906.0s] But what does mine say? [909.0s] Sweet. [910.0s] Dude. [911.0s] OK. [912.0s] Let's start again. [914.0s] Welcome back, everybody to the middle. [916.0s] This is the part. [917.0s] We're keeping the first one. [919.0s] Oh, of course we are. [920.0s] Yeah. [921.0s] Yeah. [922.0s] No, we're just segueing into this new intro for it. [925.0s] Welcome back to the real middle. [927.0s] Ah, yes. [928.0s] That was just the test middle. [930.0s] Yeah. [931.0s] We're just testing the ground, seeing how you liked it. [933.0s] Loved it. [934.0s] Leave us. [935.0s] Hit that like, comment, subscribe button. [938.0s] Smash that like button. [939.0s] Drag it straight over to the trash can. [941.0s] Do it. [942.0s] Five star review. [943.0s] Yeah. [944.0s] Thank you. [945.0s] I'm not participating in this part. [946.0s] Oh, come on. [947.0s] I'll was up. [948.0s] Hey, if you like that was up reference, you should join us on Patreon. [953.0s] There's lots more where that came from. [955.0s] Oh, yeah. [956.0s] So much more where that came from. [958.0s] Carla's just holding her face in her hands now. [960.0s] I don't know if it's because of that or because of just being tired. [963.0s] But like, we're going to try and wrap it up here. [965.0s] All put together. [966.0s] Yep. [967.0s] So join us at patreon.com slash dumb dragon cast where when you are a patron, you get an episode dedicated to you. [972.0s] Like today's patron, Laura. [975.0s] Laura. [976.0s] Laura. [977.0s] Oh, I'm sorry. [978.0s] Laura. [979.0s] What's up? [981.0s] What's up? [984.0s] Also, I'm sorry, Laura. [985.0s] We love you. [986.0s] Yeah. [987.0s] Also, I hope Laura is older than, like, twenty seven and will maybe understand that reference. [991.0s] Or maybe even way older than that. [993.0s] I don't know how old that reference is. [995.0s] I don't know. [996.0s] Thirty five and up then. [998.0s] That makes more sense. [999.0s] If you've seen a scary movie that is a step before. [1003.0s] So, like, maybe mid twenties. [1006.0s] You know what? [1007.0s] Laura's been with us for a long time. [1008.0s] They know what we've got, what we're dealing out. [1010.0s] OK. [1011.0s] All right. [1012.0s] Fair enough. [1013.0s] Not a new, not a new patron. [1015.0s] A long time patron. [1016.0s] So thank you for being here with us. [1018.0s] Thanks for sticking it out, Laura. [1019.0s] Yep. [1020.0s] Yes. [1021.0s] And if you just forgot and the credit card just keeps racking up. [1024.0s] This is your reminder. [1025.0s] This is your reminder that you're still paying. [1027.0s] This conversation never happened. [1029.0s] Never happened. [1030.0s] All right. [1031.0s] We thank you for being here with us and hope that you are having a wonderful week ahead and we can't wait to talk to you again very, very soon. [1038.0s] So bye. [1041.0s] Bye. Bye. [1042.0s] We love you. [1043.0s] That's the middle. [1044.0s] That's the middle. [1045.0s] That was it. [1046.0s] We love you. [1047.0s] Strong discount. [1048.0s] We sure do. [1049.0s] Hop off that horse. [1050.0s] Love you. [1051.0s] Bye. [1052.0s] Love you guys. [1053.0s] Bye. [1054.0s] We're back in the shop and you've moved on from the conversation. [1060.0s] Alydin, you're busy unloading some boxes that Bizard has you working on. [1067.0s] And Bizard clock chimes on the far wall and your focus turns to it. [1078.0s] And we find ourselves the night before down in the basement of the casino. [1088.0s] You just entering through the door and you hear a bell of a of a game being played. [1095.0s] Somebody has just won something big that that transitions into the door shuts behind you. [1103.0s] Before you is a large oak desk in the middle of this rather luxurious space and a tall leather chair with a figure sitting there. [1117.0s] He's got his back turned to you and there's a glowing red aura coming up from the other side. [1127.0s] There's a puff of smoke as a large hand comes down over the arm of the chair and in it is a rather fat cigar that as you watch it, [1142.0s] you see the ember of the end of the cigar illuminate more as if somebody's lighting it. [1151.0s] Nothing and there's no no ignition source near it. [1155.0s] It's just being held in this person's hand. [1159.0s] Then a deep booming voice echoes out still hasn't turned around. [1168.0s] So, Bizard, you want to make a move on the mayor? [1174.0s] You've heard correctly. [1178.0s] Have a seat. [1180.0s] You see in front of you there are two chairs. [1184.0s] I sit on the left chair. [1186.0s] Oh, that's the one with the trap door and the alligators in the pit. [1191.0s] You sit down and the cigar goes back behind the chair and a big plume of smoke again. [1200.0s] What's your issue with the current leadership? [1204.0s] To put it bluntly, they're bad at business. [1211.0s] From my side, I get left alone. [1215.0s] I get a little kickback. [1218.0s] Business is good for me. [1221.0s] A disruption in that could could change my business. [1228.0s] It's interesting. If you're getting a kickback, then I assume Nina would be the one giving you that kickback, correct? [1236.0s] Yeah, I see Nina every now and again. [1239.0s] It's more to keep us happy. [1244.0s] If we're happy, mayors happy. [1249.0s] Right. [1252.0s] Well, I'll have to admit there's not quite a lot I know about your operation in conjunction with the current office. [1260.0s] But I assume that there has to be some form of a gap that you would like to see filled, something that you've had to make some kind of compromise, I imagine. [1275.0s] But what if that compromise no longer had to be made by ousting the current political figure? [1286.0s] You're not wrong. [1289.0s] You're not wrong. [1292.0s] There's a certain entitlement that comes on that side of the river. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. [1300.0s] Yes, become familiar with it. [1305.0s] It's a long pause. [1311.0s] You're in tight with them, aren't you? [1314.0s] Yeah, I'm one of the mayor's advisors. [1320.0s] As far as that goes, it is something I do for my own benefit and not truly for the benefit of the office. [1330.0s] Stroking egos, if you will. I've had to do it a lot in my life. [1336.0s] You know, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be doing it sort of right now. [1340.0s] However, I feel like I need to stroke the ego of the person that can best serve me and, well, the people who have taken care of me and, well, I mean, the rest of the town, truly. [1351.0s] Obviously the ego I've been stroking for going on almost a decade, I would imagine, hasn't quite panned out the way I expect it to. [1362.0s] Well, Mr. Wizard. [1364.0s] Please, Mr. Wizard is my father. Call me Bizard. [1367.0s] There's a substantial issue if what you wish for, somebody were to enact a series of events and those events don't go entirely correctly and anything comes back to me. [1387.0s] The protections that I have on this side of the city might disappear. [1398.0s] How far are you willing to go? [1408.0s] Because don't get me wrong. [1411.0s] I want what's best for the city. [1414.0s] This fucker up in City Hall, he isn't the best for anybody. [1419.0s] Yeah, he's fucking it up for the people that's in the streets. [1424.0s] As far as I would go, how far would I go? [1429.0s] I mean, certainly the cost of learning magic in and of itself has been a sacrifice, so what's one more thing? [1438.0s] If a fall guy is what you're asking for, then a fall guy you shall have. [1446.0s] But I'm the only one who can fall. [1451.0s] No one else, regardless of what they may know or what they may have done aiding me. [1460.0s] Because I will rally support, I will rally help from the other business owners, from people I have become acquainted with and made friends with. [1470.0s] I will be your fall guy if you make sure that I'm the only one who takes that plunge. [1479.0s] It's very noble of you. [1483.0s] You hear the sound of a drawer, and you can kind of see a little bit around. [1489.0s] It's reaching to a unit on the other side of the wall there. [1494.0s] Can't see what he pulls up, but then the drawer slides closed. [1501.0s] The chair swivels around. [1508.0s] As the camera, we don't see the figure still. [1512.0s] We just see Bizarre seated in his chair, now illuminated by this glowing red-orange light. [1522.0s] And a large gray hand slides a velvet pouch across the table towards you. [1534.0s] It lets it go and lets it linger there. [1540.0s] I reach out and take it. [1542.0s] That's the answer. [1545.0s] You do that, I can put any number of things into play. [1551.0s] I kind of open it for a second and rifle through. [1557.0s] Oh, that's, that's big, that's big crime. [1562.0s] Ok, ok, oh. [1567.0s] Alright, um. [1571.0s] Any, any clarifications you'd like, you'd like to make? [1574.0s] I mean, that's just the first page. [1576.0s] Uh, ok. [1580.0s] Everything is outlined. [1583.0s] Oh, except for this. [1599.0s] Uh, is that, is that meant if things go wrong for me or if things go right for Knops? [1614.0s] I'll figure out what to do with it, I guess, huh? [1634.0s] I, uh, stand up and I say, well, uh, Mr. Flames, it's, hopefully it'll be a pleasure doing business with you. [1642.0s] Uh, and I cast control flame to bring a light over from a candle and light a cigar as I walk out. [1649.0s] You're a chuckle as you shut the door behind you. [1654.0s] The echoing din of the casino rings back into your ears and we flash back to the store. [1661.0s] Alydin looking up at you with an empty box in her hand. [1667.0s] Are you ok? [1669.0s] Hmm. [1671.0s] Uh, yeah, yeah, um, you've finished unpacking that. [1676.0s] Ok, uh, what time is it? [1678.0s] You've been standing there for like a long time looking at the clock and stuff and just kind of like you're frozen. [1683.0s] And then that reminded me of this one guy who stayed with us for a little while. [1687.0s] His name, it doesn't matter what his name was. [1690.0s] You'll probably never meet him again anyway. [1692.0s] Um, but this guy used to just kind of like turn off. [1696.0s] Like, he'd be like, ooo, and then he would be gone for like 20 minutes. [1700.0s] I thought that was happening. [1702.0s] I thought you had what he has. [1704.0s] Um, are you talking about narcolepsy? [1709.0s] I don't think it had anything to do with dead people.
